Land speculator, revolutionary, pamphleteer, and government leader, Ira Allen (1751-1814) was a significant figure in eighteenth-century Vermont. Kevin Graffagnino outlines Iras checkered career and assesses his participation in defending an independent Vermont, supporting the Haldimand Negotiations, and developing the Champlain Valley, along with his plans to create democratic republics in British Canada and the area that became Texas.
