WHERE: at the Nolin-Murray Center on Pleasant Street in Springfield, VT
DETAILS: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute presents The Milltown in New England History with Jere Daniell, History Professor Emeritus, Dartmouth College. This program on milltown history explores the early background of how industrial organization affected community development and brought to New England the reputation as being the industrial center of the nation. The Waltham System, made famous in the textile mills of Lowell, MA, factory villages such as Perkinsville, VT, and the paternalistic Fairbanks family in St. Johnsbury, provide examples to understand the structures that created a sense of family and pride within these communities. Professor Daniell will relate these earlier industrial organization structures to how they affected the development of Springfield, Windsor, and Claremonts industrial base which then led into the Precision Valley machine tool industry. Semester Memberships $40 for all 9 programs and entrance ot the other 7 Vermont Osher Institute Programs; single program fee: $8.00.
